A New Chapter in Florida Travel: Riding Brightline's Latest Route from Miami to Orlando
When Henry Flagler dreamt of connecting Florida's cities through rail, he envisioned an infrastructure that would alter the way we move across the Sunshine State. More than a century later, Brightline's newest route from Miami to Orlando stands as the modern-day realization of Flagler's dream, setting a new standard for what intercity travel can and should be.
Embarking on a New Journey
I had the privilege of experiencing this transformative route on its fourth day of operation. My business partner and I boarded the 6:46 a.m. train from Miami's architecturally stunning MiamiCentral station, and I instantly knew we were in for a ride that was anything but ordinary. We were headed to Orlando for a conference, and in lieu of a cramped flight or a long drive, the train offered a luxurious, efficient alternative.
By 10:15 a.m., we had arrived at Orlando's state-of-the-art train station, situated conveniently adjacent to Orlando Health's new Terminal C. As we disembarked, the first thought that crossed my mind was: why hadn't this existed sooner?
An Elevated Experience
Patrick Goddard, President of Brightline and a past guest on The Hospitality Mentor Podcast, couldn't have put it better: "Brightline’s Orlando Station sets a new benchmark for transportation between two of Florida’s busiest regions, with a seamless, convenient experience that caters to today’s modern traveler. We’ve curated an experience—both in our gleaming stations and onboard our trains—that exceeds the benefit of time-savings, alone. It’s comfortable and unique, and we are looking forward to welcoming guests onboard."
Indeed, the Brightline journey is meticulously curated for today's traveler. The free Starlink Wifi—where I experienced just one brief drop—kept me connected throughout the ride. The food and beverage service in the smart car was remarkably well-executed, offering more than just sustenance but a genuine dining experience.
The Station, A Destination
One of the most impressive features of the Brightline system is the ease with which you can navigate the stations. In Miami, the MiamiCentral station is an 11-acre complex that houses not just the train terminus but also luxury rental residences, commercial offices, and an eclectic mix of retail and entertainment spaces. Similarly, the Orlando station is the only intercity passenger rail station of its kind to be located in a U.S. airport, and it provides direct access to other airport terminals A and B via the airport Terminal Link.
Weathering the Storms—Literally
The train service excelled not only in fair weather but also when tested by Florida's unpredictable climate. On our return trip, we encountered a thunderstorm and consistent rain. Had I been driving, the journey could have been perilous. Yet, we departed at 6:54 p.m. and arrived right on schedule at 10:27 p.m., safely bypassing what could have been a stressful drive.
The Future is Bright(line)
The economic implications of this project are not to be understated. With a $6 billion investment that has created 10,000 jobs and approximately $6.4 billion in direct economic impact to the region, Brightline is more than just a train service—it's a catalyst for statewide development.
The route's environmental benefits are also notable; the train system is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 72,000 metric tons per year, offering a sustainable alternative to car travel.
As someone deeply invested in the hospitality sector and a frequent traveler between Miami and Orlando, I can confidently say that I will be opting for Brightline more and more. It's not just a train; it's a comprehensive, elevated travel experience that speaks to what the future of intercity transport in America can be. After all, why settle for less when you can ride in style?
