Freewyld: A Haven for Disconnecting and Reconnecting with Nature

By: Steve Turk

In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, the need to disconnect has never been more pressing. Enter Freewyld, a groundbreaking hospitality brand founded by Eric D. Moeller, which offers a refreshing antidote to our hyper-connected lives. Freewyld is not just another getaway destination; it's a carefully crafted experience that encourages guests to unplug from technology and immerse themselves in nature.

The Vision Behind Freewyld

Freewyld was born out of Eric Moeller's personal journey and realization that true relaxation and reconnection come when we distance ourselves from the distractions of everyday life—especially technology. After years in the real estate and short-term rental space, where he experienced both the highs of success and the lows of burnout, Moeller embarked on a six-month road trip with his fiancée. This journey took them to some of the most beautiful natural locations in the U.S., and it was during this time that the seeds of Freewyld were planted.

Moeller shared, “As we traveled, I realized that I wanted to create something that would not only bring people closer to nature but also help them reconnect with themselves and each other.” This vision has become the core of Freewyld, which he describes as “bringing design-forward cabins to nature locations that are about a two to three-hour drive outside of metro areas.”

A Unique Hospitality Experience

What sets Freewyld apart from other retreats is its emphasis on disconnecting from technology. Moeller explained, “At Freewyld, we encourage our guests to put their phones away and fully engage with their surroundings.” This is achieved through various amenities and programs designed to make the process of unplugging both enjoyable and rewarding.

One of the unique features of Freewyld is the "wild mode" experience. Each cabin is equipped with a physical switch that, when activated, turns off the Wi-Fi and locks away guests' phones. In return, guests gain access to special areas of the cabin and receive personalized activities designed to foster connection and relaxation. “The idea,” Moeller said, “is to create a space where people can be present and make memories without the constant pull of technology.”

Freewyld's Growing Footprint

Located in Idyllwild, California, Freewyld's first property features four beautifully designed cabins nestled in nature. Moeller and his team have big plans for expansion, with a second phase of development in Idyllwild that includes adding 15 more cabins and a host of new amenities. Additionally, the team is scouting for new locations, with Sedona, Arizona, being a potential site for future growth.

Moeller’s approach to expansion is deliberate and thoughtful, focusing on creating sustainable and unforgettable experiences rather than rapid growth. “We want to grow Freewyld into a globally recognized hospitality brand,” he shared. “But more importantly, we want to do it in a way that stays true to our mission of helping people reconnect with nature and each other.”

A Brand Built on Passion and Purpose

The Freewyld brand is more than just a business venture for Moeller; it’s a passion project rooted in his love for nature, design, and hospitality. From the carefully curated design elements to the unique guest experiences, every aspect of Freewyld reflects Moeller’s commitment to quality and intention. As he puts it, “We’re obsessed with over-delivering for our guests, ensuring that each stay is a one-of-a-kind experience.”

In a world where digital detoxes are becoming increasingly popular, Freewyld offers a luxurious yet grounding way to disconnect. Whether you’re looking to escape the city for a weekend or seeking a deeper connection with the natural world, Freewyld promises an experience that will leave you refreshed, recharged, and reconnected.
